Maguey, symbol and sustenance of the mexicans
Since the pre-Hispanic period, the maguey is considered a wonderful plant, because it has provided roof, food, drink and clothing to the peoples of Mexico, however, overexploitation is killing some species.
According to information from the Federal Agriculture Secretariat, the agave genus has approximately 200 species and Mexico hosts 150 of them, that is, 75% of this group of plants.
Of the total of magueyes in our country, 55% of them are endemic, that is to say, they do not exist in another region of the world, reason why it is important to implement measures for their care, since they are part of the identity of the Mexicans.
This type of plant is resistant to high and low temperatures, plus it has the ability to store large amounts of water, to a greater extent than any other.
There is a great diversity of species of this wonderful plant, for example, to make tequila is the blue agave. To produce another drink that is representative of Mexico in the world, the mezcal, distinguish arroqueño, cenizo, cimarrón, espadín, estoquillo, lechuguilla, mexicano, papalometl, papalote, serrano, tepextate and madrecuixe. Also it is the pulquero maguey, which in its mature stage can measure up to two meters and live between eight and fifteen years, nevertheless, after its reproduction the plant dies.
The identification of the patrimonial value of the magueyes of the different regions of Mexico is based on history, in the very tradition of its exploitation and constitute important manifestations of the intangible cultural heritage of the Mexican people.
Guaranteeing the survival of all the great diversity of magueyes we have is also a way of preserving our culture and continuing to promote the development of an important agro-industry in our country based on maguey.
